Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Self-powered Wireless Hybrid Density/Level Sensing with Differential Pressure Sensors for Safeguarding and Monitoring of Electrochemical Processing of Nuclear Spent Fuel
Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity:
U.S. Department of Energy
CFDA: 81.135
Program Title: none
Note:
The objective of this research project is to develop a novel self-powered wireless differential pressure sensor for long-term, in situ, real-time monitoring of high-temperature molten salt density and level for safeguarding and monitoring of electrochemical processing of nuclear spent fuel. The three-year project will be accomplished through collaboration among three major universities (UNT, UM and NEU), General Electric Research Center (GER) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The research includes the sensor design, modelling, MEMS fabrication, packaging, wireless transmission, experiment design and validation, energy harvester design and manufacturing, system integration, and field test. The deliverables include the sensor modelling and design parameters, energy harvester design, wireless communication modulus, and self-powered sensor prototype and field demonstration results. Such sensor package will significantly improve the materials accountancy, and the associated verification activities, which will be a key element of safeguards implementation.
