Note:

This research project funds an inclusive innovation ecosystem and economic development engine for transforming the logistics industry and enhancing societal and economic value in the North Central Texas and Southern Oklahoma region. This region is the fourth largest in freight tonnage, will serve one million daily truck trips in 2040, and is the largest inland port of entry. As a key bottleneck in our nation's freight system, transformative change and innovation are required for long-term resiliency and agility. Logistics is vital to the economic strength and growth of the region and nation; it supports the supply chains of numerous industries and provides extensive trade opportunities for hundreds of firms. The Engine establishes use-inspired research to advance several critical technology areas vital to sustaining a state-of-the-art logistics system to serve as a national model for logistics transformation. Two main gaps characterize logistics innovation in the region: siloed organizations and spatial innovation deserts. The envisioned Engine addresses these gaps through several main thrusts: establishing focused logistics innovation parks distributed in disadvantaged districts; creating a pipeline of logistics research-enabled and technology-curious generations through world-class STEM education; and continuing the development of the regions world-class higher education system promoting a culture of innovation; and establishing industry-university-NGO partnerships. A consortium of institutes of higher education, public agencies, the Choctaw Indian Nation, logistics providers, chambers of commerce, and planning organizations are assembled to Engine. Many of these organizations serve minority populations. The Engine will support the development of a next-generation logistics system that is efficient, sustainable, and resilient through innovations in automation, electrification, and cyber technologies. The ecosystem promotes innovation by adopting use-inspired research leading directly to practice-oriented outcomes. The Engine will attract top research and entrepreneurship talent, produce a diverse and skilled workforce, and bring investment and business to the region, by establishing an innovation ecosystem and culture of innovation serving as a national flagship for the logistics industry. Furthermore, the Engine will provide people living in disadvantaged communities in the identified innovation deserts with opportunities to access education and employment, and be strong contributors to the region's economy.
