Note:
The objective of this project is to acquire an ultrawideband near-field probe system to build a highly capable antenna measurement facility which will provide critical support for the research, development, and testing of new antenna designs and concepts at the University of North Texas (UNT). The requested near-field probe system will be integrated with existing hardware at UNT, including a Keysight vector network analyzer operating from 10 MHz to 67 GHz and an Albatross Projects shielded chamber, to complete the build for the measurement system. The proposed facility is capable of characterizing three-dimensional radiation patterns of antennas-under-test (AUT) over a wide frequency range of 0.65-18 GHz. It will be used to support three ongoing research projects currently funded by the DoD (with a combined funding amount of ~$1.3M for UNT) and two other pending projects already proposed to the DoD. These projects involve development of antenna systems for various applications ranging from electronic support and electronic attack to wireless communication and sensing systems. The proposed antenna measurement facility is expected to significantly reduce the turnaround time for characterization, troubleshooting, and iterations of antenna designs, and therefore, plays an essential role in maximizing the overall outcomes and deliverables of these DoD-funded projects. Aside from direct contributions to the ongoing and pending DoD-funded projects, the proposed equipment will also facilitate future antenna research activities at UNT that align with several areas of interest to the DoD. Building upon the PI’s and co-PI’s past and current works on antenna research, we look forward to extending our research activities in the following core areas: (1) Affordable, wideband, adaptive phased-array antenna designs with low complexity and reduced cost for beam forming and scanning applications; (2) Phased-array antenna and beamforming for directed power and data telemetry using mm-wave bands (3) Reconfigurable multibeam antennas for mm-wave communications (4) Flexible antenna designs for wireless telemetry, power transfer, and energy harvesting applications targeting implantable/wearable sensors and intra-body communications (5) Self-interference cancellation techniques for full-duplex antenna systems These future research areas are highly relevant to some programs of the Office of Naval Research, including “Active Aperture Array”, “RF Surveillance”, and “Electronic Warfare”. Thus, having the proposed facility would help propel UNT forward to a more advantageous position to address the needs of the DoD in basic and applied research.
