Note:
In this Phase II STTR program, QuesTek Innovations LLC, a leader in the field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), proposes to continue our Phase I effort to develop an enhanced lower cost tool material for friction stir welding on HSLA steels. UNT will continue to work as a subcontractor to QuesTek in Phase II stage, focusing on tool processing, property testing on materials and friction stir welding tests. The following are envisioned research tasks to be performed by UNT in Phase II. • Identify material processing of the desired material in initial kickoff. • Purchase hard phases (ceramics) powder and elemental powders for materials processing. • Process tool material samples by ball milling and spark plasma sintering (hard phase with HEA as binder based upon calculation recommendation from QuesTek). • Perform mechanical testing and microstructural characterization of tool material samples. • Help QuesTek target vendor for FSW tool production. • Initial Friction Stir Welding plunge tests on Navy HSLA steels and follow on analysis. • Friction Stir Welding tests and analysis on Navy HSLA steels in option stage.
