Note:
University of North Texas (UNT) will support the following objectives: 1. To support the use of core-levels spectroscopies, especially XPS and XAS, for the interpretation of measurements made in ST1 and ST2. Specific systems and processes to be investigated are mentioned below. 2. The study of problems related to the structure, composition. and oxidation state of ferrihydrite, Fh, and related compounds. 3. The study of the XPS and, in particular, the XAS L2,3 edges of 3d transition metals other than Fe. This would include Mn, Co, and Ni to identify the presence and oxidation state of these elements when they are present in compounds relevant to the Fh studies. The study of ligand K edges of compounds will also enable information about oxidation states and chemical bonding to be obtained and will be coupled with measurements in ST1.
