Note:
This research project has three long-term objectives. First, investigate and explain the variation in food system quality in communities of color and immigrant communities due to state and local policies. Second, to explain immigrant and ethnic small food businesses contributions in mitigating the harmful effects of a poor food environment in minority and immigrant communities. Third, we synthesize, make policy recommendations, and share this new knowledge with academic and community groups working towards food system sustainability. Concerning our first objective, we undertake extensive statistical analyses, interviews, and archival research to explain broader food environment trends, as well as SNAP/WIC usage among minority and immigrant communities. Secondly, we will collect data from public business websites and state health departments to collect geographic and business information on immigrant and ethnic retail grocers to show that overlooking immigrant and ethnic food business owners incorrectly identifies communities as low-quality food environments. We plan to create relationships with community groups that work towards sustainable food systems for communities of color or immigrant communities for our final objective. The research project will be led by Dr. Andrea Silva at the University of North Texas?s (UNT) Department of Political Science:
