Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Manipulating the soybean seed oil and protein reserves for the development of high value soybean cultivars and germplasm

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: The Ohio State University

CFDA:

Program Title: none

Note:

In this research project, we are working towards the understanding of how to manipulate soybean for desired seed traits. We are developing new and improved soybean cultivars and germplasm that have high yield with optimum oil and protein content to maximize processing value of soybean on a per acre basis. Employing a build-test-learn approach we are identifying metabolic bottlenecks in carbon flux to oil and protein during seed development. We are using this information to incorporate innovative genetic strategies leading to increased seed oil and protein and synthesis of novel oil co-products including essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, while seeking ways to raise total oil content without compromising protein content, for food and feed markets.
