Note:
This research proposal aims to develop a Smart Health system to address the limitations in the current post-surgery surveillance of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for treating abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The practice of EVAR is to implant a stent graft in the aneurysm sac to bypass the weak spot, which is caused by an abnormal bulge on the wall of the abdominal aorta. EVAR has become exceedingly common as a preventative treatment for AAA that mitigates the high risk of rupture. However, there is a significant risk of post-EVAR complications, such as blood flow into the aneurysm sac (i.e., endoleak) that would eventually rupture the aneurysm. The current practice of post-EVAR surveillance requires frequent in-clinic monitoring using imaging techniques, which has the risk of repeatedly administrating iodinated contract and losing patients to follow-up. This is an area that has not fully implemented a Smart Health system based on implantable healthcare devices, which have led to new insights into ambulatory monitoring and automated diagnosis for many other health issues.
