Note:

The use of speech interfaces in devices have been increasingly used by consumers over the last few years. Through the use of speech and dialogue, we can communicate more information than printed information in very little time (Litman et al., 2006; Tannen, 1982). Dialogue systems, software agents that automate dialogue exchange between machine and humans, could engage health consumers using human language and conversational turns. If we could automate the vaccine counseling experience through a speech-based dialogue system, we could delegate the task of informing patients on the HPV vaccine. Our overall objective is to develop a speech-enabled conversational agent that can help motivate health consumers’ intention to vaccinate. To undertake this project, we intend to 1) develop ontology-based knowledge sources for comprehensive HPV vaccine information derived from our preliminary work for the agent (Aim 1), 2) design the interaction experience of the agent for HPV vaccine counseling, and 3) pilot test its feasibility in enhancing patient knowledge and perception for vaccine intervention.
