Program Title: none
Note:
The purpose of this study is further test the viability, acceptability, and effectiveness of the male and female student-athlete versions of the Bodies in Motion program. In this study, we will compare student athletes who will have completed the four-session program to age, sport, gender, and race-matched student athletes from universities who did not participate in the program. We expect that student athletes who participate in the program will show higher levels of body satisfaction, fewer disordered eating symptoms, and higher levels of psychological well-being (i.e., lower depression and anxiety) than the matched controls. Six university athletic departments within the PAC-12 will serve as intervention sites and six will serve as controls (i.e., treatment as usual). Athletes at the intervention sites will be offered the Bodies in Motion program and allowed to enroll. Facilitators at each intervention site will be trained in the implementation of BIM by the researchers. All student-athletes, whether intervention or control, will complete mental health screening questionnaires twice per year as part of the PAC-12s ongoing assessment of athlete psychological well-being. These outcomes will serve as the quantitative data for the study. In addition, semi-structured interviews will be completed with randomly selected subsets of the intervention athletes to further explore their experiences with the program and what they found to be most and least helpful. Interviews will occur within one-month of program completion, and then again at six and 12 months.
