Note:
During phase 1, Dr. Buongiorno Nardelli will work on Task 1.1: Application instance development. This would involve identifying application instances and ways to generate these, focusing on the calculation of band structures in solids, a classically tractable problem which serves as a valuable benchmark for applying state-of-the-art quantum algorithms to periodic systems. Dr. Buongiorno Nardelli will develop tools to estimate the resources required for solving these instances and the metrics to decide whether a solution has been achieved. He will focus on exploring both the traditional reciprocal space representation of the electronic Hamiltonian, and one that introduces a novel real-space approach making use of a generalized Bloch theorem representation. The focus will be on modelling systems that present challenges such as electron localization and correlation effects. During phase 2, Dr. Buongiorno Nardelli will devote his time to Task 2.5: Benchmark preparation, where he will lead the finalization of one the benchmarks selected by DARPA. This will include identifying the relevant instances for the selected Benchmark, estimating the classical resources required to solving these, finalizing testing procedures, utility estimates and thresholds as per the description in the proposal.
