Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Equitable or Not? Assessment of the Current Pathways to Foster Transfer from Two- to Four-Year Institutions in Chemistry

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

CFDA:

Program Title: none

Note:

The purpose of this proposed work is to identify programs and other support mechanisms that encourage Black, Indigenous, and Latinx students from two-year colleges to transfer to four-year universities and pursue graduate degrees in chemistry. This work is guided by the following questions: 1. What transfer pathways are currently in place for students intending to transfer to four-year institutions, and to what extent are stakeholders aware of them? 2. How have students navigated current structures, and how do they describe the affordances and limitations of those structures? 3. What recommendations do students, staff, and faculty have for improving current structures, and what supports are missing at all stakeholder levels? To design and implement structures intended to encourage students to persist in chemistry, we must first ask their needs, as well as determine the effectiveness of any current structures in place.
