Note:

The purpose of the Summer Transportation Institute (STI) Program is to create awareness and stimulate interest in middle and high school participants to seek career opportunities in the transportation industry; enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills; and attract and acquaint a broad and diverse selection of youth with various aspects of the transportation industry. The Performing Agency shall perform tasks at the University of North Texas campus, in Denton, Texas, all in accordance with the scope of services below. These tasks generally include, but are not limited to the following: Task 1. Develop Curriculum The Performing Agency shall email the Receiving Agency, the draft curriculum within ten (10) days of the signing of this agreement for review and approval by the Receiving Agency. This curriculum will include and focus on educational endeavors that expose participants to all aspects of the transportation industry and its role in society. It will also create awareness and stimulate interest in the participants to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in transportation industry including highway construction and related transportation careers. The Receiving Agency will review, request revisions, and approve the final curriculum within fifteen (15) days of receipt of the draft curriculum. Task 2. Conduct Participant Recruitment and Selection The Performing Agency shall begin participant recruitment for the program within five (5) days of the signing of this agreement. High school participants (grades 9-12) will be targeted for program participation and encouraged to apply. The program will be promoted, and participants recruited by: (1) sending announcements to school counselors, other area ISDs, local churches, community organizations, non-profit agencies, and media outlets; and (2) publicity through the Performing Agency media outlets. The recruitment and selection tasks will be completed no later than May 26, 2023. The Performing Agency shall review all applications submitted and will use the following criteria to select participants: (1) age and grade level, (2) completion of pre-algebra or equivalent, (3) grade point average, (4) an expressed interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and transportation or construction careers, (5) letters of recommendation – at least one, and (6) a written essay stating their reason for participation and how they believe the program will help them meet their career goals. A minimum of twenty-four (24) participants will be enrolled in the two and a half-week nonresidential program on the campus, with one day for FAA ACE Academy. All applications will be reviewed, and selected participants will be notified within 48 hours of submitting the application with the last notice for the program on May 31, 2023. Task 3. Conduct the STI The Performing Agency shall conduct the STI program from June 5 - 21, 2023. The program includes a strong core curriculum that introduces high school participants to a variety of transportation careers and provide educational enhancement activities. The program shall offer a stimulating introduction to the transportation industry and various modes of transportation. The program shall include a series of academic, research, and practical experiences designed to pursue transportation careers. Participants shall receive training and exposure to science, mathematics, and technological enrichment through planned educational activities.
