Note:

The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) program was funded and governed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) to address the need for a diverse workforce now and beyond the 21st Century and to create awareness of career choices and opportunities existing in today’s transportation industry. Therefore, the goal of the NSTI program is to increase the number of students pursuing advanced degrees and careers in Transportation related STEM fields while helping to broaden the participation of women and minorities in those fields, and over time the program should help to deliver a STEM-capable workforce. For short terms and detailed activities, the objective of an NSTI program is to provide middle and high school students, minority youth, young women, and disadvantaged individuals with an awareness of careers in the transportation industry and to encourage them to take transportation-related curricula in pursuit of a vocation in transportation. Align with the NSTI program objective, the University of North Texas (UNT) NSTI Host Site will provide a 2.5-week summer program for high school students (9-12th grades) in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area to provide them the awareness of careers in the transportation industry and to encourage them to take transportation-related curricula and to pursue advanced degrees and careers in Transportation in the future. UNT is a perfect place to be the host site for the NSTI program. UNT, located in Denton, TX, serves a large population of Latinx students in the Dalla Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) public research (R1) university, which consists of eleven colleges and two schools. Several departments in different schools conduct transportation-related education and research in all aspects, such as Construction Engineering, Public Administration, and Marketing, Logistics and Operations Management, etc. In addition, the DFW metroplex has rich resources for transportation educations, such as the DFW airport (one of the largest and busiest airports in the US and the headquarter of American Airlines (AA)), US Aviation Academy (a famous school to train pilots from all over the world), the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) (a system combines trains, buses, and paratransit services), etc. The activities of the UNT NSTI 2022 summer program will include academic classes, enhancement programs, sports and recreation, field trips, and other activities, such as orientation/closing meetings and UNT campus tours. The academic classes will include land transportation classes (Transportation Planning, Public Transit, Railroad Operations), air & space transportation classes (Flight Theory and Aerodynamics, Aircraft Performance, Flight Instruments, Airport and Flight Operations), water transportation classes (Marine Cargo Handling), transportation safety classes (Transportation Safety and Non-Motorized Transport Modes, Air Travel & Vehicle Safety, Improving Safety via Communication), and computer labs. The field trips will visit the DFW airport and AA headquarter, US Aviation Academy, and DART. See section c.7 for details.
