Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: MMPI-3 Assessment of Feigned ADHD within University Clinics: Validation of the ADHD-Diagnostic Specific Stereotypes (ADHD-DSS)
Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity:
University of Minnesota
CFDA:
Program Title: none
Note:
A cornerstone of MMPI measures has been its effectiveness at assessing overreporting across professional settings and feigned presentations. The new generation of feigning indicators may play an invaluable role in identifying not only the general response style (e.g., overreporting) but also the likely feigned presentation (e.g., feigned ADHD). Robinson and Rogers (2018) developed an ADHD feigning scale with diagnostic-specific stereotypes (DSS) subsequently named ADHD-DSS. It proved very effective with the MMPI-2-RF at distinguishing between (a) feigned and genuine ADHD and (b) feigned ADHD and feigned other disorders. Utilizing university clinics, this model will be applied to MMPI-3 with multiple improvements. For example, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is considered a near-neighbor comparison (i.e., closely related diagnosis) to ADHD. This grant will test the effectiveness of the ADHD-DSS and examine whether a parallel scale, SAD-DSS, will be needed to differentiate between feigned-ADHD from feigned-SAD. If successful as earlier research, this programmatic research will distinguish the MMPI-3 from other multiscale inventories in diagnostic-specific feigning.
