Note:
This project will promote the progress in science by advancing fundamental understanding of optical properties of organic color centers with precise functionalities and establishing the probing behavior of the carbohydrate-functionalized organic color center for specific biological targets in either physiological and pathological pathways. In addition, the stable, biocompatible, and none autofluorescent properties of carbohydrates offer unique approach to study protein functions compared to using antibodies, the mainly explored targeting ligands that are often highly immunogenic. In particular, the combinatorial diversity of SWCNT structure and glycopolymer configuration offers vast potential for chemical innovation and biochemical sensing and imaging advancement. If successful, this work will provide a transformative approach to study the carbohydrate recognition in biology that is essential to uncover molecular mechanisms of many biological processes. This work will also open up possibilities to create a new class of multicolor fluorescent probes with distinct properties that are previously never achieved for many applications, such as biosensing and bioimaging.
