Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Establishing an emotional narrative database of bilinguals: A cultural-linguistic research experience program

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)

Program Title: none
Note:
Other Sponsored Programs Assessment and intervention in speech-language pathology must consider cultural-linguistic influences on communicative behaviors in bilingual populations. Little is understood about the cultural and linguistic effects on abilities to narrate emotional experiences, which are central to daily functions. The proposed project aims at filling a gap that impedes the enhancement of cultural-linguistic competence in speech-language pathology—there are no searchable databases that provide data regarding how emotional experiences are narrated by bilingual speakers. This proposed project has two aims. First, this project represents a feasibility study that aims at developing a database of bilingual emotional narratives. Participants will be selected strategically to represent significant differences in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural features (Chinese-English and Spanish-English bilingual speakers). The shareable database, if made available, could be used for training and research that targets students’ and clinicians’ awareness about cultural-linguistic influences on emotional narration. Second, the study will examine the efficacy of a research experience program that targets students enrolled in a speech-language pathology program. Specifically, the project will investigate the effect of research activities (data collection, reading group, student-led mini lectures) on enhancing cultural-linguistic competence in participating students, who will be selected based on the priority to expand diversity and equity in future clinician-researchers.
