SAMs- 1.1.1 This project has an approved IRB. Our project will explore the relationship between stigma and social support from family and HIV treatment adherence and retention in care among Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals. We will pursue the following research aims: (1) Explore how Latinx families in South Texas conceptualize and perceive the role of familial stigma and social support in the cultural context of their relationships with HIV+ Latinx LGBTQ+ family members, (2) Describe the lived experiences of HIV+ Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals in South Texas with familial stigma and support, and (3) Assess the impact of family stigma and social support on HIV treatment adherence and retention in care among HIV+ Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals in South Texas. We will meet these research aims by engaging in qualitative research (individual and group interviews) with HIV+ Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals and their families in South Texas. Dr. Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez will serve as the Academic Multiple-Principal Investigator at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, School of Social Work. Mr. Elias Cantú will serve as the Community Multiple-Principal Investigator at the Valley AIDS Council (VAC). Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez and Mr. Cantú will be responsible for participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. The Graduate Assistant will also assist in these tasks, as well as in general administrative tasks and transcription of the interviews. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez will fulfill his responsibilities by traveling to the community sites in South Texas where participants receive HIV care for the purpose of participant recruitment and data collection. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez will also assist Mr. Cantú and VAC in recruiting participants at the RGV Pride event to be held in 2022. Finally, Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez will assist Mr. Cantú and VAC in designing and printing of a booklet with study findings to be shared with participant stakeholders.
