Note:

SAMs- 1.1.1 Dr. Nancy Aguirre, of The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, will present her research for the monograph project “Right-wing Nationalism during the Mexican Revolution.” In her presentation for a Texas audience at the McAllen Public Library, she will focus on the role of Mexican exiles in forming a community in San Antonio and along the Texas border from 1910 to 1920. Mexican exiles developed La Prensa and Revista Mexicana, two of the top-selling U.S. Spanish-language publications in Texas during the early twentieth century. Dr. Aguirre finds that many historians have neglected the importance of right-wing exiles in shaping Mexican American society in Texas. Descendants of these exiles have held prominent positions in the Tejano community across the last century. The Mexican Revolution was a major event in the formation of Texas’ Hispanic community due to the emigration of thousands of people to communities such as San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, and Dr. Aguirre’s presentation will address an important aspect of Hispanic-American history for a diverse audience in South Texas.
