Program Title: The Texas-Wide, Data Science REU: 2022-2025
Note:
1.1.1 Our working hypothesis is that compared to a student who does not experience such a program, a student going through the Rice Data Science REU will be more likely to continue on for advanced study (Masters or, especially, PhD) after the bachelor’s degree. By recruiting a diverse set of students into the program, we can help to ensure the diversity of our next generation of highly-trained scientists and engineers. Using what we have learned in giving a high-quality experience to approximately 30 undergraduates over the last two years, Rice University, together with Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University, University of St. Thomas and the University of Texas (a c o ns o r tium of three R1 universities and three minority-serving institutions), proposes the creation of a multi-institutional “Texas Wide, Data Science REU” with a focus on reaching traditionally underrepresented students and building a steady pipeline of diverse talent in the area of data science. As stated, the hypothesis driving the design of this REU is that par ti cipa ti on in such a program can increase the likelihood of par ti cipa ti on in advanced graduate study. The REU will serve 70-80 students yearly, through the initial three years of the program. A key part of the research experience is access to a comprehensive set of professional development oppor tu ni t i es
