Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Assessing multi-trophic impacts of microplastic pollutants on macroinvertebrate food webs in Matagorda Bay, Texas

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust

Program Title: Assessing multi-trophic impacts of microplastic pollutants on macroinvertebrate food webs in Matagorda Bay, Texas

Note:

We deem this project restricted research (SAMs 1.1.1), because this project addresses priorities to conduct environmental research with a focus on macroinvertebrates (i.e., insects, crustaceans, and gastropods). Macroinvertebrates account for more than 75% of all described animal taxa and provide important ecosystem services such as pollination, nutrient recycling, pest control, and providing a food resource to other wildlife. Aquatic macroinvertebrates serve as bioindicators of water quality, given that many taxa are sensitive to changes in turbidity, dissolved oxygen content, and the presence of pollutants. Our primary goal is to identify the impact of free plastic pollutants on macroinvertebrate communities in Matagorda Bay, with the intent that the results of this study will provide guidance for monitoring, mitigation, and restoration of degraded estuarine systems along the Gulf Coast of Texas.
