Note:
1.1.1: The objectives of this research project are to describe and understand: 1) the charge structure and lightning initiation as lake-effect moist convection over the lake transitions to stratiform precipitation processes farther inland; 2) how charge regions and lightning are affected by the Maple Ridge Wind Farm 50 km east of Lake Ontario, a farm of almost 200 turbines that are over 100 m tall; 3) lightning flash sizes and energies associated with lake-effect storms; and 4) how electrical observations compare to microphysical observations (in-situ and remote). Project LEE findings will also be compared with similar observations in warm and other cool season thunderstorms such as during extra-tropical cyclones and electrical numerical model simulations to improve upon charging and lightning initiation hypotheses.
