1.1.1, 1.3.1, 1.3.2: The overall goals of this research project are to cultivate a wider interest among undergraduate-level students to pursue a graduate degree and professional career in plant breeding, and train a graduate-level student aspiring to be a plant breeder, particularly from the minority and economically disadvantaged groups, to be a competitive leader by providing them with the essential training and education meeting the requirements for critical knowledge, experience, and skills of both public and private stakeholders. The goals of the proposed project will be achieved through the following specific objectives: provide plant breeding-related internships; provide competitive graduate research assistant ships, design and implement a graduate student plan of study, guide graduate students in the implementation of an actual breeding program, enhance the education experience by encourage memberships in professional and/or academic organizations; and validate the effectiveness of the designed graduate degree program.
