Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Dissecting cotton fiber development and quality determinants at the single cell level for breeding improved fiber quality
Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity:
USDA-NIFA Cooperative State Research Ed & Extension Service
CFDA: 10.31
Program Title: n/a
Note:
1.1.1: The purpose of this research project is to take advantage of single-cell transcriptomics (scRNA-seq) approach to do a comparative analysis of G. hirsutum and G. barbadense subjected to high temperature and drought stresses. Specific objectives include to generate: 1) an atlas of gene expression of the cotton seed ovule at all stages of fiber formation, 2) the regulatory networks controlling the different phases of fiber formation in Upland and Pima cotton, 3) candidate genes playing key roles in the different states of fiber formation that determine fiber quality, including those that determine the length of the fiber elongation phase and the amount and architecture of secondary cell wall deposition. The results of this project will benefit cotton producers by opening new avenues for breeding superior cotton fiber suitable for moder spinning technologies.
