Note:
1.1.1: This research project supports studies aimed at understanding how focused microwave energy is coupled into plasma systems. The activities exploit this improved understanding in order to develop microwavestripline based structures for time and spatially resolved energy deposition into plasmas, modifying their characteristics for specific applications. The objectives of the proposed research are: 1) To develop strategies that use microwave stripline architectures to achieve time and spatiallydependent modification of plasmas by studying two different types of plasmas: the laser-induced plasma (LIP) and the reduced-pressure pulsed glow discharge (GD). 2) To study the influence of pulsed microwaves on the LIP and pulsed GD plasmas using advanced time and spatially-resolved plasma diagnostics measurements. 3) To demonstrate the utility of microwave-enhanced plasma discharges in several applications where plasma properties are tuned to best benefit.
