Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: CAREER: ELUCIDATING THE ROLES OF EXTRACELLULAR METAL IONS IN GUT MICROBIOTA INTERACTIONS

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: National Science Foundation

Program Title: n/a
CFDA Linked: Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Note:

The main research objective is to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms for how metals affect cell-cell and cell-host interactions in the gut microbiota. We hypothesize that metals can mediate bacterial nteractions by binding to cell surface molecules and host proteins. Here we will use Lactobacillaceae and a combination of biochemical and analytical methods to establish mechanisms for how metals affect 1) bacterial cell-cell interactions and 2) cell-host interactions between bacteria and mucin proteins.
