Note:
The project I am proposing focuses on Plato’s and Aristotle’s theories of wisdom, the highest intellectual virtue. The project contributes to the literature in three ways. First, it will be among the only systematic and comparative philosophical studies into what wisdom (sophia) is for each thinker. Second, it argues that the standard understanding of Plato’s and Aristotle’s conceptions of wisdom—typically implicitly endorsed or stated in passing, rather than defended—is mistaken. The monograph also highlights a set of substantive and timely disagreements between the two philosophers about wisdom and its social and political role. Lastly, it draws from a rich and growing literature in classical studies about the cultural significance of wisdom to resolve old philosophical puzzles and to motivate new questions. This literature in Classical Studies has been overlooked by many historians of philosophy; the project aims to bridge the two conversations. SAMS 1.1.5
