Note:
Thoram and Gaastra will measure basaltic samples in the University of Houston laboratory overseen by Sager. Sager will mentor his younger colleagues and do measurements on sediments from Site U1578. Overall, this is a large project because several hundred samples must be measured, and magnetic characterizations must be done to make sure the measured paleolatitude data are sound. The paleomagnetic team will submit a collaborative NSF proposal to complete this work. Funding is requested here to lay the foundation for preliminary measurements, with the majority of the funds going toward Thoram's postdoctoral salary so that he can work on the samples collected during the expedition. 1.1.1
