Note:

This proposal presents work to be undertaken by co-chief scientist William Sager. I was the lead proponent for proposal 890, which became Expedition 391. The initial focus was to measure paleolatitudes for the Walvis Ridge hotspot for comparison with the Hawaiian-Emperor and Louisville seamount chains, an objective supported by the 2007 “Hotspot Geodynamics Detailed Planning Group” (Duncan et al., 2007). After the proposal was accepted, I became co-chief scientist and a step removed from the main lab work. We accepted four paleomagnetists for the expedition, with the three from the US being early career scientists. One of these is my former Ph.D. student who finished in December 2021 and is now working for me as a post-doc to get publications out. I needed to take a support role and let the young scientists lead the charge, with the help of my experience. My proposal here is to make paleomagnetic measurements that would otherwise overlooked. In addition, I will mentor a minority undergraduate student. SAMs 1.1.1
