Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: AFFECTIVE POLARIZATION AND DEMOCRATIC NORMS

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: George Mason University

CFDA: 00.000

Program Title: n/a

Note:

I plan to examine the effects of affective polarization on citizens’ acceptance of democratic norms. While existing observational data – the American National Elections Study – indicates that affective polarization is negatively correlated with acceptance of democratic norms, this data has a limited number of questions measuring belief in democratic norms and, additionally, cannot show any causal relationship between the two concepts. These two limitations can be addressed through survey experiments. It is crucial to test the downstream impacts of affective polarization on a broad variety of political outcomes, and consequently I request funding for two experiments. These experiments will tackle crucial measurement questions (which must be answered for research on this topic to progress) while also answering the substantive question of whether affectively polarized people are less likely to abide by democratic norms.
