Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: RO1: Improving Glycemic Control with Electrical Stimulation in Mexican-Americans

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: NIH - NATL INST OF DIABETES & DIG & K D
CFDA Link: HHS

Program Title: Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research
CFDA Linked: Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Research

Note:

Although exercise is highly effective in improving insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, the majority (80%) of adults in the US do not meet recommended weekly physical activity level guidelines resulting in type 2 diabetes in epidemic proportions over the past few decades. Electrical stimulation (e-stim) offers an easily adhered to and practical means to enhance metabolic health in populations with particularly low adherence to physical activity (Mexican Americans); however, the extent to which e-stim is effective is not known. In this clinical trial, we will determine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (e-stim) as a novel alternative strategy to increase glycemic control, insulin sensitivity and metabolic health in an at-risk sedentary overweight/obese Mexican-American population.
