Note:
Suboscine passerines represent more than ten percent of all birds globally, and roughly one in three of all birds in the bird-rich Neotropics. They vary widely in biology, occur in every terrestrial habitat, and have been considered a model for studies of evolutionary radiation. Prior NSF-funded work has produced a backbone phylogeny containing nearly all of the 1,306 previously recognized suboscine species. However, this work fails to capture the divergence events most important for evolutionary research and species delimitation – those between the youngest lineages.
