Note:
We will employ existing algorithms to spatially vary and functionally grade the periodic mesostructure in two material phase microstructures. Candidate microstructures will be optimized through microstructural based large-scale computational modeling of the dynamic response under varying loading condition. We will identify periodic graded microstructures optimized for graded density flyer and kinetic energy penetrator applications. We will develop a fundamental understanding of manufacturing methodologies to spatially vary the density and traditional engineering properties of these materials (strength, tension/compression asymmetry and fracture toughness).
