Note:

Patients diagnosed with obesity are at an increased risk both of being prescribed opioid analgesics (for chronic pain conditions) and developing opioid use disorder; however, the mechanisms that underlie these risks are not well understood. This proposal investigates the impact of eating a high fat diet (which can lead to obesity) on the therapeutic and abuse-related effects of morphine, an opioid analgesic drug, using rat models. These projects will provide a clear picture of the ways that obesity and opioid use disorder converge to increase risk for individuals.
