Note:

The University of Texas at El Paso Biological Collections (UTEP-BC) contains one of the largestholdings of preserved Chihuahuan biodiversity in the world, as well as assemblages of organisms originating worldwide. The herbarium holds one of the most extensive collections of ChihuahuanDesert flora with an emphasis on its mountain regions that form part of the northern range of the Madrean Pine-Oak Woodland biodiversity hotspot. The herpetology collections contain the largestamphibian and reptile specimen holding from Central Africa in the western hemisphere as well ascomprehensive collections representing the northern Chihuahuan Desert. The primary objective ofthis proposal is to increase capacity for the UTEP-BC. Specifically, installation of compactor cabinet systems to house the UTEP-BC herbarium (>82,000 specimens) and herpetology (>24,000specimens) collections. The proposed funding will provide quality, long-term housing for theseimportant collections that have been increasing in interest to a worldwide audience due to recentdigitization efforts at UTEP. The compactor cabinets will also allow for consolidation of theUTEP-BC mollusk collections within space currently occupied by the herbarium alone, which willopen space important for expanding the growing Biology faculty for this Hispanic servinginstitution.
