Note:
Lack of self-efficacy has been identified as one of the major reasons for retention issues in computer science. Self-efficacy can be improved in the classroom using encouragement such as vicarious experiences and verbal persuasion, which are also instruments to promote productive struggles. Our proposal builds on the premise that supporting the development of self-efficacy through productive struggle in lower-division computer science courses can lead to engaged student learning and improved academic performance. We propose an online platform, called PULSE (Productive strUggle for deveLoping Self Efficacy), that will foster productive struggles to improve self-efficacy and enhance skill development through long-form assignments outside the classroom. PULSE will inform the instructor about student struggles to use the information to intervene early and transform the struggles into productive ones.
