The implementation of LIBS offers a promising technique for the rapid and convenient analysis of materials that has the potential of streamlining the manufacturing processes and the analysis of legacy materials. We will characterize a handheld LIBS device for analysis and the associated extrinsic effects of sensitivity, repeatability, and compounding effects of multiple users. This will be enabled through the development of a mechanical system and controls to systematically examine the extrinsic effects (stand-off distance, angle, repeatability, etc) of LIBS measurements on model material systems.
