Note:
Via Senior Capstone Projects, students in the Department of Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso will analyze possible improvements to current glovebox design. Analysis areas will focus on glovebox materials (impervious to acids, provide shielding to radiation, heat resistant, and resistant to breakage, etc.), glovebox ergonomics (all areas within glovebox are visible, easy access to all areas within the glovebox, ease of movement for items within the glovebox, etc.), and maintenance (ruggedness, replacement of glovebox components, access to utilities, etc.). The main goal of this work is to think outside the “glovebox” and identify long-term alternatives for conducting actinide work in gloveboxes. This is a “greenfield” project, with few preexisting constraints on what gloveboxes should look like. Application of new materials to glovebox construction is encouraged. Cost to fabricate the prototype gloveboxes should not be considered in this study. Students with guidance from Faculty and assistance from LANL Actinide Operations will perform the work as part of a capstone project and provide reports, pictures, and videos to support findings.
