Program Title:
Basic Scientific Research
CFDA Linked: Basic Scientific Research
Note:
UTEP will design and manufacture short fiber reinforced high-temperature ceramic composites using direct ink write 3D printing techniques. To improve the fracture toughness of high-temperature ceramics, this task will include ink formulation development, printing parameter optimization, sintering of ceramic composites, and characterization of material properties. Short fibers such as SiC fibers and carbon fibers will be incorporated into ceramic slurries such as ZrB2 and/or SiC for direct ink write printing. Rheology of the prepared composites slurries will be characterized to provide design guidance for printing success. Design of experiments of printing parameters will be carried out to optimize printing parameters. The sintering process will be carried out at ARL using high-temperature sintering facilities. Material characterization tools such as SEM, nano-indentation, thermal conductivity, and load frame will be used to reveal material properties of interest. UTEP will also work closely with ARL on potential technology onboarding at ARL if needed.
