Note:

The Department of Public Health Sciences, College of Health Sciences, at The University of Texas at El Paso,, is dedicated to prepare health leaders to improve the health status of diverse populations through education, research and outreach. There is a high prevalence of obesity among the population of the Paso del Norte Region. There is a concern that high levels of obesity can result in a higher prevalence of diabetes given that obesity is a risk factor for developing this costly chronic condition. In an effort to raise awareness among the population of the Paso Del Norte Region, an interdisciplinary team of academicians with different areas of expertise, including dietetics, community health, education, and public speaking, propose to develop, integrate, and implement a curriculum in Diabetes Awareness in one of the required courses for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in Public Health. The purpose of this training is to empower students with the required knowledge in diabetes awareness and diabetes along with teaching for adult learning and public speaking skills, so they can contribute to the collective effort of the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation of addressing a prevalent, costly and detrimental condition like diabetes in the Paso Del Norte Region. Students enrolled in Practicum I will learn the topic of diabetes and diabetes awareness, education/pedagogical skills for adult learning, and public speaking strategies. Training the students in these areas will prepare and empower BS Public Health students with the required skills needed to raise awareness among different sectors in the Paso Del Norte Region.
