Note:
The number of African Americans/Blacks, Hispanics/Latinx, Native Americans/ Alaskan Natives or AHN who enter and complete graduate computing studies at PhD-granting institutions is disturbingly lowdespite their growth in numbers nationally and representation in undergraduate studies. In fact, Latinx UGenrollment increased from 22 percent to 36 percent between 2000 and 2018 (NCES, 2020), composingapproximately 19 percent of the total UG population in 2017 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Yet, the number of Latinx who completed graduate programs in computing fields comprised a mere 3 percent in master’s and 2 percent in doctoral programs (NCSES, 2020).The Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions [CAHSI] is well positioned to increase the number of Latinx students who earn graduate degrees through the strategies outlined in its BPC-Ae grant. In particular, increasing involvement of undergraduate students in research and expanding adoption of the Affinity Research Group model will support the deliberate development of students’ skills and success and, we anticipate, their desire to enter graduate studies.
