Program Title:
Engineering Grants
CFDA Linked: Engineering Grants
Note:
This supplement request serves to fund PhD student Kaushik Pradhan for 3 months at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland WA under the GEOTHERMAL INTERN DCL NSF 23-024 call. Mr Pradhan will develop temporal monitoring frameworks for the detecting and tracking of fluid-generated fractures in the context of geothermal energy production, following theoretical and practical methodologies develop by collaborators at UJF Grenoble, France. The funds will fund Mr Pradhan's travel, residence, and salary while at PNNL. Work will involve processing of PNNL's EGS dataset, which involves repeated active source recordings at a dense seismic array at ultra-high frequencies, and code development to compute both bulk velocity variations due to fluid injection and localized changes in scattering strength due to opening of fractures. Mr Pradhan will commute every day to PNNL from local residence in Richland from May 15 to August 15, and we anticipate work will continue on a part time basis during the school year and potentially next summer.PI Chaput will also travel to PNNL for a week during the summer to both assist with code development and work directly with Dr Knox on related avenues of research.
