Note:
The imminent transition to a clean energy economy has led to increasing demand for talent in the energy sector. The nation must find new ways to draw on the indispensable talents, knowledge, and resources of higher education institutions serving a disproportionate number of minority students to better meet the demands of tomorrow's energy workforce. To meet this goal, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is partnering with top-tier Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and American Indian and Alaska Native Serving Institutions (AIANSIs) that are active in areas aligned with NREL research and workforce development. Three faculty mentors and three students from University of Texas El Paso have the opportunity to participate in the year-long NREL Student Training in Applied Research (STAR) internship program. The NREL STAR internship program aims to increase NREL's engagement with minority serving institutions (MSIs) to help enhance faculty and student connections, and create pathways for sustained research engagement. As part of this program, students will participate in a ten-week research-based summer internship at NREL where they will work alongside NREL mentors in their technical disciplines. Following the summer internship, follow-on work shall be conducted by the three student participants, alongside the three faculty mentors, throughout the academic year and the duration of this subcontract from September 1, 2022 to May 1, 2023.
