Note:

El Paso experiences significant air quality problems with tropospheric ozone. Ozone is monitored at ground level by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) at multiple sites around the El Paso area, but to understand its distribution and evolution during the summer, when it peaks and can cause exceedances of air quality regulations, it must be monitored in three dimensions. This project will support TCEQ-funded efforts in 2023 to construct and launch specially-designed weather balloons equipped with ozone sensors (ozonesondes) at UTEP as part of a statewide monitoring campaign. The project will employ two UTEP graduate students in Summer 2023 who will be trained to assemble, launch, and track ozonesondes and interpret the data as part of State air pollution control investigations.
