Note:

LGTBQ+ youth who learn in affirming and inclusive schools have better academic and overall outcomes (Kosciw et al., 2013). National surveys reveal, however, that 60% of LGBTQ+ students do not feel safe at school because of sexual orientation, and 45% do not feel safe because of gender identity (Greytak et al., 2018). While there is limited work on Latinx LGBTQ+ youth, 55% have reported verbal harassment based on race/ethnicity/sexuality (Diaz, 2009), and nonbinary Latinx youth disclose a lack of safety in schools that impacts their ability to do their schoolwork (Pollitt et al., 2021). Yet, substantial guidance is available on how to improve school experiences for LGBTQ+ students. Gay-straight alliances and accepting adults at school are two highly-effective supports (McCormick et al., 2014; The Trevor Project, 2019), and educators need opportunities to learn about LGBTQ+ advocacy, GSAs, and to share resources and approaches. We propose to expand one such nascent space-the annual Queer(in)g Our Classrooms event (now entering its fifth year) hosted by the UTEP College of Education-by co-planning and piloting a two-day summer advocacy institute for educators, particularly GSA faculty sponsors, to develop their knowledge of and skills in LGBTQ+ advocacy with a focus on Latinx experiences. Collaborating partners include the Borderland Rainbow Center and faculty advisors and student leaders of the Gay/Queer Straight Alliances at El Paso Community College, Montwood High School, Jefferson/Silva High School, and Guillen Middle School.
