Note:
The UTEP Library's Special Collections Department requests funding from the NEH to complete a preservation plan for materials held in the C. L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department. A consultant from the Northeast Document Conservation Center with experience in preservation planning for academic institutions will be hired to help assess environmental needs and to recommend ways to efficiently use the existing facilities and plan for future expansion. The consultant's report will serve as the basis for a epartmental reservation plan. The resulting plan will also support efforts to make improvements in environmental controls and security for the collections. Because of space limitations, the collections-in a wide variety of formats-are stored in six different locations: five spaces within the UTEP Library and one remote storage facility in a campus space previously used for recreational athletics. The archival, book, map, and media collections support a wide variety of research and teaching activities, and creating a preservation plan will help extend the time that these materials will remain usable.
