The objectives of the UTEP Diabetes Awareness Education Training Program for Community Outreach program are: Objective 1. Integrate Diabetes Awareness, Teaching Methodologies, and Public Speaking modules into an already existing course (Practicum I) required for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. a.Diabetes Awareness Standardized Program - Curriculum Development and Training i.Develop curriculum materials on the topic of Diabetes Awareness. The purpose of preparing these materials is to provide standardized information on the topic of diabetes to student trainees. ii. Train students in the following areas: 1.Teaching Methodologies for Adult Learning 2.Public Speaking skills Objective 2. Conduct educational sessions on diabetes awareness among community members. a. Prepare a Diabetes Awareness Curriculum Training Guide/Speaker's Handbook The research team obtained a grant from the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation on August 4, 2022 for the amount of $33,790.00 to prepare the above-mentioned curriculum. Additional funding from Paso Del Norte Community Foundation in the amount of $9,915 were received to conduct additional activities that will complement our original project. These funds will be allocated to support the completion of training of public health students as well as to prepare a student training handbook. Drs. Ximena Burgos and Sarah Ruiz will develop a Student Training Handbook for the Diabetes Awareness Standardized Program. Dr. Maria Duarte-Gardea will collaborate with team members to achieve the project's goals. The handbook will include diabetes information and speakers notes.The team will deliver a training to public health practicum students to prepare them to deliver the curriculum to the community. Professionalism is an essential component, so uniforms (polo shirts) will be provided to the students upon completion of the training. Deliverables for this additional funding includes: a)Preparation of the Diabetes Awareness Curriculum Student Training Handbook. b)Diabetes Awareness Standardized Program students trained.
