Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Speech-Language Pathology: Mobile Hearing Screening Kit For Children With Disabilities

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: EL PASO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Program Title: #N/A

Note:

The current proposal seeks to create a Mobile Hearing Screening Kit which can be easily transported by van with UTEP Speech-Language Pathology graduate students and faculty to any regional area for the purpose of screening for hearing loss in children. One of every 22 infants in this country is born with some kind of hearing problem. One in every thousand children has a severe to profound hearing loss which greatly affects their overall development, especially in the areas of speech, language, and social development. Hearing loss also impacts a child's educational placement and access to educational resources. Unfortunately, there exists a great disparity in the Paso del Norte community. For a wide variety of reasons, children with hearing loss are not identified as early as is possible through screenings and evaluation, and are therefore not able to take advantage of critical early intervention therapies. Early screening and early intervention can change the trajectory of a child's language development and lead to better educational success. The Mobile Hearing Screening Kit will consist of two portable audiometers, two otoscopes, a folding table, popup canopy tent with walls for privacy, folding chairs, and a storage trunk. This kit will be easily transportable with the goal of targeting children in the most underserved areas of our community. A large number of children in the Paso del Norte region can be reached through this project. It is anticipated that between 250-350 children will be screened for hearing loss yearly. Children with disabilities in rural and under-developed areas in the region including Sparks, Horizon City, Fabens, Tornillo, Hueco Tanks, Fort Hancock, Chaparral, Canutillo, and others will receive this health care service in their own communities. Families in these communities may seek out services less frequently due to citizenship status, transportation issues, or insurance needs.
