Note:
The objectives of this project are to: (1) Develop thermo-responsive materials that effectively absorb and desorb water from paper. These materials will have: (1a) fast kinetics, relevant to the timescales of high-volume paper manufacturing, (1b) low energy input, utilizing low energy or waste heat to lower energy costs by a minimum of 30%, up to 60%, and (1c) high cyclability, able to sorb and desorb water for thousands of cycles for relevance to commercial application; (2) Integrate these materials into a conveyor belt composite in a paper machine for water extraction and conduct lab- and pilot-scale testing; (3) Quantify the real-world energy and cost savings through system-level modeling and technoeconomic analysis.
