Program Title: none

Note:

The scientific goals of the Global Dynamics Constellation (GDC) emphasize the need to understand the momentum and energy exchange rates between the thermal ions and the neutral gases in the ionosphere and thermosphere. Among other variables, these rates are critically dependent on the thermal ion number density, composition, and the ion-neutral velocity difference. The energy exchange rate is also reflected in the ion temperature. Thus, measurements of the thermal ion number density, temperature and three-dimensional ion velocity are essential contributions to the overall success of the GDC mission. This proposal puts forward a design, fabrication, operation and analysis plan for a Thermal Plasma Sensor (TPS) for the GDC constellation that will meet the GDC requirements for total ion number density, ion temperature and the drift perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field.
